Bathroom Design Ideas

Good bathroom design ideas can stand the test of time in both practicality and style. It can be a big chunk of money to redesign a bathroom or master bathroom it is important to get your design right however, a refurbishment to your existing bathroom is a great way to improve your home without having to spend a lot of money.

Once you have worked out your mood board ideas and your budget it is time to get inspired and get going. It is worth baring in mind that a good bathroom can add value to your property and it is one of the key areas that buyers find most appealing when they are looking for a new home.

Your bathroom should offer a luxurious experience where you can relax, unwind and feel totally as ease so think about the colors and materials which would enable that to happen. It is a good idea to also think about your storage. Simple white sanitary ware is by far the best option. Even on a tight budget you can create a really effective look. Here is your opportunity to give yourself a space to indulge in.

Family Bathrooms: It would not be possible for a family home not to have a bathtub and further more the absence of a bath in the home reduces the value of the property. So which type of bathtub will you go for? What size? Fitted or free standing? I always try to keep family bathrooms child friendly. That means they are accessible, as safe as possible and a space which everyone loves to be in. Have a look in the gallery: GALLERY

Small Bathroom Design: Why not convert a small bathroom into a spa. If you have more than one bathroom then taking out the tub and having a good power shower or rain shower added is a good option. The trendy name for this type of bathroom is 'wet room'. For small bathroom design it is not always necessary to install a glass partition to section off the shower area hence the name wet room however, you may decide that you would prefer one like the image below shows. There are great examples of wet rooms in the gallery:

Bathroom Wall Decor: I am not a big fan of adding faff to bathroom walls especially to small bathroom design. Keep it simple is always better. Not the "safer" option, just better. Consider what is really necessary i.e. lighting, mirror, radiator or towel rail for heating, perhaps shelving, toilet roll holder, robe hooks and once you have accounted for those, take time to look at what your wall finishes will be.

When I design, I always try to apply harmony to a room even down to making sure that the tile joints on the floor line up with those on the walls. I am pretty detailed. Anyway, back to walls, have a look at current trends. Big tiles, smaller tiles, mosaics, horizontal or vertically laid pattern. Ceramic or porcelain tile? or granite?

Concept: Does your bathroom design ideas really need a concept? a theme? Well the answer is yes. Yes, because if your design style is 'country' then you should learn more about that particular concept so you can select the best country bathroom decor and the same goes for example if your taste is Japanese design then your finishes should reflect that style and so on and so forth. Even if your home design is minimalistic, your concept should follow minimalistic design principles.

FINISHES AND MATERIALS

Most people prefer plain whilst others prefer opulence. Everyone has their own unique preferences when it comes to style and bathroom wall decor however that does not mean that you always know what to choose. That is why so many people get it wrong and why I want to help you get your bathroom design ideas right. The section on concept is a good place to learn more about different styles and from knowing what your design style is then it is far easier to select your finishes and apply them to your bathroom design ideas.

Mosaic Tiles: some of the best bathroom design ideas have mosaic tiles to both the floor and walls and some use mosaic to highlight a feature. I really like mosaics as they come is such amazing ranges and a variety of sizes: 10x10mm, 15x15mm, 20x20mm, 25x25mm, 50x50mm and 100x100mm.

I have used mosaic tiles in bathrooms, bedrooms and hallways, swimming pools and as feature areas in commercial projects.

TIP: clever use of mosaic to a small bathroom design can make the room look bigger.

Glass: Excellent material for use within the bathroom design ideas. It makes an elegant shower partition/screen, beautiful sinks and very modern counter-tops. Maintenance is easy but should be cleaned frequently so it always looks great.

Counter-tops: I am going to begin with asking you to avoid using MDF as a counter-top and the reason is simple, MDF cannot and will not withstand the daily exposure to the splashing of water. As with the kitchen, granite, corian, or reconstituted stone are all great options.

FLOORING

Tiled flooring in either ceramic, porcelain, stone, travertine or granite are all great and look amazing. I would even suggest to you that timber can be used however remember to have it completely sealed and finished or it will begin to look aged in no time and eventually you will have to replace it. IRONMONGERY

My advice is to decide upon your bathroom design ideas and stick to them to avoid having a mix match of items that look like a big mess. Finishes come in chrome (polished), satin or mat. Have consistency of design for your door handles, locks, toilet roll holders, robe hooks, soap dish/dispenser, and taps/faucets. Good ironmongery will make a big difference to your finished room so take a look at the ranges available and make your decision. As with all your decisions... enjoy the process.
