I encourage you to draw up house floor plans before making any creative changes to your home. It is these drawings that will provide you with your room layout information so that you are able to analyze the space available to work with.
Your house floor plans will allow you to access:
1. Functional and usable space
2. Poorly used space
3. Inefficient space
To make good decisions based on the best location of your furniture, a set of plans would help you get the job done and to do this, all you need is a sketch of your rooms.
You just need to measure up your room and get the information onto paper. It can be as rough as the example on the right.
The image above is an architectural drawing. This type of drawing is a necessary part of a design and build project. In other words, if you are renovating and remodeling your home and require walls to be knocked down and rebuilt, then this is the type of plan you would have drawn up.
An architectural drawing contains and demonstrates very precise information and sizes which provides for the following:
- accurate changes and developments within a space
- orders of materials are exact
- money and time is well spent
Your design brief will also be an important player to help you prepare your new layouts. Create your brief, your mood board and then your house plans.
TIP: You don't have to be an interior architect to create simple and useful drawings for yourself however, please consult with an interior architect or architect before making any big changes within your home to ensure your safety, building safety and your proposed changes comply with your local authority's building regulations.
The example of a room layout shown above has been drawn to assess the
position of the furniture and the proposed location for a new projector
so that the family can watch movies.
This type of drawing is called a floor plan. Floor plans allows the available space to be reviewed and analyzed for levels of comfort and practicality. It also helps you make the best decisions so that you can achieve the best layout possible. This particular room functions as a home office and as a great family room.
