Staircase Interior Design

So why should there be a section dedicated to 'staircase interior design'? -because there is just so much to consider...

Your staircase is basically the transition between levels and it is this structure that can really let your design down or do the opposite, and completely transform a dull space into an inspiring area of your home.

The below image shows how you can add framed artwork and photos all the way from one landing to the next. Note that there has not been a huge amount of color used, if at all and it looks stunning. The carpet pattern works well, in fact it is the carpet that helps to make this staircase design look fantastic.

Your staircase could be constructed from wood, steel, glass and could be carpeted, stone finish and have open treads or they may be closed. There are so many options however, sticking to your concept will dictate your end result for example, you would not put a glass staircase into a Shaker interior design concept nor would you have a steel staircase in a classic French design.

The other points to consider are your balustrade and handrail, which are usually constructed from like for like materials i.e. steel with steel, wood with wood and so on. However, this is not a 'golden rule' therefore, it is possible to combine materials.

Work with your mood board to help your get your ideas looking great.

The images above show two fantastic ideas. The wallpaper selected for the left image, incorporates a French baroque theme and the stairway design on the right is styled in a modern, Moroccan contemporary concept.

To finish a carpet off you could add a stair rod in between the risers. Below are some examples. Essentially rods are used to hold the carpet in place however, they can also create a luxurious look.

Should your staircase design require to be relocated, or you have decided to have a new one installed, then you need to find a good structural engineer who will work with your design ideas, and will ensure your staircase is constructed correctly for safety.

Traditionally staircases are built straight however, there are also spiral staircases, cantilever, open or enclosed.

The image below, left shows a closed, timber staircase with a glass balustrade, and the right staircase is an example of a timber tread, cantilevered from the wall. Both are beautiful and could fit into modern, minimalistic interior designed space.
