Cold climates would not usually have a tile floor finish in the bedroom as shown on the right, however it looks fantastic and is so easy to maintain.
It is the perfect option should you live in a warm country.
Go for it.
My homes in Dubai were each special to me and it was truly a wonderful
experience to design and decorate them.
I had a great time, loved it and look forward to my next property.
All my apartments have been open plan and tile flooring in every room.
The space just opens up, therefore rooms can appear bigger which could be a great should you have some smaller rooms. I had the same neutral design in all rooms other than the bathrooms and kitchen. That also made the spaces appear larger.
The floors were so easy to clean and always looked great. I have a cool collection of rugs which are especially great on a hard floor finish. Rugs are a good idea to help you create comfort and zone off areas within larger rooms and open plan living spaces.
Being a designer I get to work with lots of great finishes and for sure, this is one of my favorites. The ranges are extensive and the variety is huge which enables you to create unique and effective interior design.
One of the first things you should be aware of are the types of tiles that are available to choose from. The variety is endless which means there is something to suit every design style and personal taste.
Check out the info I posted on the WALL TILE section which breaks down which types are is commonly used at home. It will help you to understand which finish to choose i.e. ceramic or porcelain. Each has its own benefit so it's definitely good to know the difference before you make your final decisions or purchases.
Apart from type, the finishes come in all sorts of shape and sizes. Large, small, square, rectangular or as you can see in the bathroom images below, hexagon. The choice is huge so your design can go anywhere you like. Use your mood board to help you arrange your ideas.
The bathroom below, is styled on a vintage design style however, you can choose tiles to suit any concept that you have in mind.
You may even consider using wood in your bathroom which is great however, to avoid water damage you could select wood effect bathroom tiles similar to the example shown in the image below right. I think they look fantastically like the real deal.
Below left is a brilliant contemporary idea based on a wood effect tile. This finish alone could transform your space. It looks so stylish.
Remember that everything you choose is for a reason and should add a great deal of value to your design when everything is assembled together. Your floor is one of the biggest finishes to dictate your final look. Spend your money wisely as it can be costly outlay and make your design changes well worth your time and effort.
Your entrance or hallway could look really interesting with this type of floor finish and it creates a clean looking space.
Below left is an example of slate and on the right is a full bodied, porcelain tile. Slate is the kind of material that is commonly found on roofs. It is very durable so it works great in high traffic areas. As it is a natural material, it can bring an organic look into your home. It is also extremely low in water absorption making it an ideal finish your kitchen, bathroom or wet room.
Both images show a grid style which can add help add modern touch to a classically designed space. It is elegant and you never really tire of the simple, timeless aspects of design.
For fun you could play with a chessboard, black and white floor like those shown in the images below. On the right is a home office space which looks elegant and has been thoughtfully put together. This delightful finish reminds me of the movie Alice In Wonderland which you may have seen in which case, you will know it as a signature throughout the film. Who could forget about it?
It can certainly make your interior design look tasteful and that bit different to other areas in your home.
This is a very striking combination and really enhances the look of a room. The polished finish reflects lots of light into the spaces which really brightens the rooms. Your lighting levels are important, especially natural light so you may benefit from a polished floor in your home. Something to think about.
As there is such a huge variety to select your finial design(s) from, I
would love to here from you, so get in touch and tell me your story or
ask a question and if I can help you, I will.
