Usually we associate wall tile ideas to bathrooms and kitchens. However, there is a growing trend to have other areas within our homes tiled. I have designed entrance ways and hallways using tile, living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms also.
Both images shown below are fantastic examples of how modern and contemporary wall tile design can look.
WHAT IS A TILE?
There
are thousands of designs available to choose from BUT before
considering any design, style or color it is important to choose the
correct tile type.
The most commonly used types of tile are ceramic and porcelain. They can look similar however, they are quite different.
CERAMIC:
this type of tile is a blend of clay, water and minerals which is
baked in a kiln. This type of tile is not very durable and can also be
quite porous however, when cured a top surface is applied to provide
both design and protection. The glaze provides a level of absorption
prevention and helps to prevent chipping and breaking.
PORCELAIN: is a great option if you are looking for a hard wearing or long lasting finish. Porcelain is much denser than ceramic therefore should last longer. The colors available for this type of tile are usually full bodied which means the color is all the way through the tile instead of appearing only on the top surface. Therefore should a tile chip it is less likely to be noticeable.
Above are two wonderful wall tile ideas which show how luxurious a room can become using mosaic tiles.
MOSAIC for creating unique feature walls that carry design impact it may be possible for you to use mosaic. Perhaps you could replace a tile here and there in your bathroom with colorful mosaic tiles or create a stunning splash back in your kitchen. The image below is an example of mosaic tiles. The ranges are extensive and are available in a huge variety of color, which means there is always something to suit. They are fun to work with however, shop around to make sure you are getting the best price.
In amongst your wall tile ideas you could consider having an optical tile similar to the awesome example below. This type of tile can create a luxurious and expensive looking accent wall. When I look at the at that design and color choice of that particular bathroom, I immediate think of Armani Casa.
Another option for you to consider is to use a tile paint to revamp your existing wall(s). This is a great choice should you be working to a tight budget. There are fantastic ceramic tile paint collections available.
This is not something I would be quick to recommend you treat bathroom tiles with unless the area is not directly in contact with water. There are paint ranges suitable to use in areas of high humidity however, make sure they are also from appropriate tile paint ranges.
